Ambriano's work is developing a consistent representation in finalist Art Awards including The Paddington Art prize, and in 2013 he participated in the Kelton Artist Residency at Cooma, NSW.
My work is expressionist in nature. I paint primarily in oils and usually work from plein-air sketches. I am driven by being physically in the landscape, especially focusing on my local environment in the Sutherland shire that still holds pockets of scrub criss-crossed with fire and nature trails that lend themselves to capture with gestural brush movements.
There is a simple overriding love of the bush that drives landscape painters, and my recent trips to places such as Royal National Park and The Ben Boyd and Mimosa National Parks, have enabled me to explore the differences in light and structure... between these regions of natural landscape...The smells of oil paint and eucalypt gums become merged in the silence, punctuated with the gentle bush rustles of animal, bird and brush stroke on canvas.
This stillness, found within the bush landscape of my painting trips, means that I am able to connect with the minutiae while painting the bigger picture, the grander natural environment.
My paintings are the culmination of these seductive plein-aire experiences expressed in a lusciousness of the oil paint surface luring the viewer to venture into the landscape for themselves and to appreciate the need to nurture what remains.
