David Manks: Divergence

For David Manks, ‘Divergence’ is the point at which two paths separate from one another, presenting us with choices that can significantly impact our direction in life. For example, when walking through the woods and encountering a fork in the path, you are faced with a decision about which way to proceed. ‘Divergence’ does not solely pertain to physical separations; it can also manifest as philosophical divisions, prompting us to reflect on the choices we make.’

In this exhibition, my paintings delve into this multifaceted concept, inviting viewers to engage with various interpretations of landscapes that range from vibrant coastal areas to serene rural settings.
Through my work, I aim to convey my personal and subjective responses to several locations I have explored in depth over time. Some of these places are well-known to me, eliciting feelings of nostalgia, while others represent fresh experiences that ignite my curiosity. The interplay between familiarity and novelty generates an exhilarating and, at times, challenging juxtaposition, ultimately enriching the creative process and enhancing the diversity of this exhibition.

My intention is not to merely recreate a specific scene or subject matter. Instead, I aspire to evoke a profound sensory response that captures the essence of being immersed in the landscape. This exploration frequently results in distorted horizons and a deliberate emphasis on simplification, both of which mirror the nature of memory and perception.

The paintings in this exhibition are the culmination of extensive field visits to various locations. During these excursions, I engage in on-site sketching and capture photographs that serve as reference points when immediate drawing is not practical. This intimate process of becoming increasingly familiar with each location is a vital aspect of my artistic journey, allowing me to connect more deeply with the environment I seek to depict beyond the literal.

Each piece has been meticulously crafted using oil paint on either canvas or board, ensuring a rich texture and vibrant colour palette that reflects the landscapes I have experienced.

Moreover, divergence can also describe the situation where two or more things differ or move in distinct directions from a common point. It encompasses the creative process of generating multiple, unique ideas or solutions to a problem. Through spontaneous and free-flowing thinking, divergent thoughts encourage the exploration of various possibilities and routes forward, pushing the boundaries of conventional thinking and inspiring innovation. Divergence refers to the point where two things separate from each other. Divergence can also represent a philosophical division not just a physical split, of landscapes from coastal scenes to rural settings.

Divergence, reflects my personal and subjective responses to several locations I have revisited and explored extensively. Some of these places are familiar to me, while others represent new experiences. This combination of familiarity and newness creates an exciting and occasionally challenging juxtaposition, which enhances creativity and diversity in the exhibition.
