Judy Trick first exhibited with Artsite in 2014, invited by the gallery's curators to take part in the annual Great Unknown, an exhibition of local under-represented Sydney artists. She has exhibited with Artsite regularly ever since, including three solo exhibitions: Surface (2021), Unearthed (2024), and Full Circle (2026).
An inveterate traveller, Judy has journeyed widely with pen, pencil and camera in hand, recording colour, movement and impression across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas and Oceania. After decades in Sydney, she made a permanent move to Gerringong on the NSW South Coast, where she now works from a studio surrounded by the escarpment, shorebirds and coastal light that increasingly find their way into her work.
In Judy Trick's paintings there is a sense of experimentation and repetition in her abstracted shapes and the layered patterning that moves across her built-up surfaces — intense reds, yellows and blues broken by subtle oranges, purples and a stroke of near-acid green, intensifying the viewer's response to her perception of the world as experienced.
Judy's work has been exhibited as a finalist in major Australian art prizes, including the 2022 Highly Commended Award at the Harden Murrumburrah Landscape Prize, the Kangaroo Valley Art Prize, the Hunters Hill Art Prize, the Mosman Art Prize, and the 2025 Illawarra Creator's Mark Art Prize. Her work is held in public and private collections including the King Edward IV School Collection, Southampton, UK, and The King's School, North Parramatta, NSW.
Full Circle, her third solo exhibition with Artsite, is the most personal work Judy has shown to date. The title draws on the Japanese concept of Sunyata and the meditative Enso circle — an emptying out, a return to origins — reflecting two years of contemplation, healing and renewed energy, and paying quiet tribute to her late father Harold Woodward and her mother Hilda. As Judy puts it: "The arc has now formed into the full circle. There is a sense of arrival and acceptance”.
In talking about Full Circle, Judy comments:
The latest suite of works takes inspiration from the Japanese concept of Sunyata — an emptying out of ideas — and the meditative value of the Enso Circle, a metaphor of return to origins.
This personal reflection saw me wrestle with metaphors to express a major event, the subsequent healing and recovery — push and pull, advance and retreat, sadness and joy. It references a memory of my late father Harold Woodward and his scientific exploration of the nature of atoms, and pays homage to my mother Hilda's fifty-year practice at the potter's wheel.
I immersed myself in nature, finding grounding and permanence in the local escarpment and sacred mountains, while the ethereal movements of shorebirds uplifted me, and the power of early summer bushfires reminded me of the symbolic nature of force and regeneration.
