Jamie had recently moved into the artist cooperative where I was living as a young street artist named ‘The Dirt.’ We agreed I should paint his picture. When he arrived for his portrait he was wearing the bandleader’s uniform jacket. I think he had Sergeant Pepper’s in mind, but I was put more in mind of Rembrandt’s portrait of Jan Six, by those shiny buttons with the green tunic. I think the painting ended up somewhere in between. ~ Chris Rochester, 2026.
