Artists Working on Paper
Paper is one of the oldest and most democratic of artistic surfaces. Portable and immediate, it invites both the considered mark and the spontaneous gesture — and in the hands of a skilled artist, it can carry as much weight and presence as any canvas.
Artists Working on Paper brings together a selection of works from the Artsite Contemporary stockroom that share this singular material as their foundation, while demonstrating the extraordinary range of expression it sustains.
Six artists are represented here, each with a distinctive relationship to paper. Christine Druitt Preston works with paper as a material to be folded, sewn, printed and collaged — her unique lino block works on Arches, Clairefontaine and Wenzhou papers carry a handmade intimacy that bridges printmaking and mixed media, celebrating pattern, memory and the beauty of the natural world. Kerwayne Berry brings bold energy and luminosity to Arches Oil Paper, his mixed media and oil works capturing the movement of Australian light across coastlines, rockpools, escarpments and open paddocks. Daniel Pata’s ink and charcoal works on paper reveal a more intimate and searching side of his practice — spare, precisely observed drawings in which snow, cloud and stone are distilled to their essentials. Francesca Raft uses oil on paper to make small, intense landscape sketches that feel at once fleeting and resolved. Madeleine Tuckfield-Carrano’s Folded Light series brings her signature language of layered colour and texture to an intimate scale, the paper surface absorbing and reflecting light in ways that echo her larger canvas works. Completing the exhibition, Edith Cowlishaw’s etchings with hand watercolour remind us of the long tradition of Australian printmaking on paper, her editions and unique states speaking with quiet authority to a deep connection with the bush that has shaped her decades-long practice.
Together, these works make a compelling case for paper as a primary medium in contemporary Australian art — not a preparatory step, but a destination in its own right.
