Congratulations to Kerry Johns for her selection as a Finalist in the 2022 Sunshine Coast Art Prize with her painting A Particular Place.
The national acquisitive Sunshine Coast Art Prize is a dynamic visual arts award reflecting outstanding contemporary 2D arts practice in Australia. Now in its seventeenth year, the exhibition presents the remarkable finalist works by artists from across the country.
The recipients of the Major prize, Highly Commended and Artist Residency will be determined by our guest judge Ellie Buttrose, Curator, Contemporary Australian Art, QAGOMA. The major prizewinning artwork will be acquired into the Sunshine Coast Art Collection.
Artist Statement:
For me there has to be complete openness throughout the process of painting. That means forbearing to stick to any program, subject, composition, colour register. I have to feel its possible to change everything.
I try to stay blind to its future, taking no heed for possible or even probable consequences, just trying to enter but at ever y point trying to hold my sense of conviction that it’s this colour, in this place, in this way.
It’s a finding process until a point arrives when it becomes a following process, following the inevitabilities. If I can concentrate and not become ambitious, eventually I will come round a corner to see a surprising resolution before me, something I could never have thought up.
The winners of all major prizes will be announced on 6 October 2022.
