Daniel Pata: Wanderlust 2023. Solo exhibition Artsite Contemporary Australia. 09 September - 02 October 2023. SOLD: Daniel Pata - Sunset at Ross River, East MacDonnell ranges, 2021 Oil on canvas, 60cm x 90cm. Exhibited as finalist, 2021 Wynne Prize Exhibition, AGNSW.

Daniel Pata is a recent finalist in the 2021 AGNSW Wynne Prize, for landscape painting, while his 2021 Dobell entry was selected for the Salon des Refusés, S. H . Ervin Gallery & Travelling exhibition. He has regularly featured in finalist awards including the NSW Parliament Plein Air Painting Prize, AGNSW Dobell Prize for drawing, and the Kedumba Drawing Award, amongst others.

Daniel's paintings explore the extremes of landscape, ranging from coastal environments to arid regions of the outback such as Mutawinjti, the Flinders and Macdonnell Ranges. Much of Daniel´s work is painted directly from the subject, "en plein air".

Daniel Pata regularly travels on painting trips within Australia and Europe, in particular spending time drawing and painting in France where he has explored aspects of Cézanne´s pictorial elements which have significantly influenced the nature of his work.

Daniel Pata’s latest solo exhibition, High Country, is dominated by works depicting Katoomba and the Jamison Valley—landscapes he regards as part of one of the largest canyon systems in the world. The exhibition features spectacular precipitous cliffs, clouded valleys, and expansive vistas, offering a compelling exploration of the diverse range of colours, tones, and rich textures these environments present. The dynamic interplay of space within these scenes continues to reveal itself to Pata with each return visit.

This body of work also draws on material developed en plein air in the Snowy Mountains and reflects his sustained engagement with the Blue Mountains—an area he considers one of the most visually and emotionally powerful landscapes on earth. For Pata, the high country holds a profound spiritual significance, and his artistic connection to the region has only deepened over

Reflecting on his first exhibition and the advice of artist Lloyd Rees—who encouraged him to continue working in the high country—Pata now sees that guidance as prophetic, having shaped a significant and ongoing direction in his practice.

I continue to explore material produced en Plein air from the snowy and look forward to my continuing work in the Blue Mountains, one of the great places on earth where the impact is still exhilarating  pictorially.

High country to me is a place of special  spiritual presence. Looking back to my first show and Lloyd’s comment, for me to continue working there, has certainly come to pass. ~  Daniel Pata, May 2025.
